Modesty Creek road access remains under review

by George Plaven, Montana Standard

“The Anaconda-Deer Lodge County commission will wait to decide whether an alleged county road should be open to the public while the matter is further reviewed.

Courthouse records found by two residents suggest Modesty Creek Road is owned by the county, though a private gate blocks access to a stretch running east to Dry Gulch, northeast of Anaconda.

Dale Schafer and Shawn DeMers requested the commission declare the entire road county property, and open the gate leading into private land owned by Ilija Letica of the Michigan-based Letica Corporation.

While the commission held a discussion and heard comments at its work session Tuesday, it chose not to take action while the county continues its own research.

Commission chairman Mark Sweeney said they will revisit Modesty Creek Road in another month or two to see if there are any new discoveries.”
