Ravalli Co. says gated road public

KECI NBC News

“Ravalli County commissioners Wednesday said a portion of a remote road in the south Bitterroot Valley should be open to public access, and a gate that has restricted its use for years should be removed.

The future of a portion of Hughes Creek Road that runs through private property brought a packed house to the commissioners’ meeting room.

Hughes Creek Road is adjacent to the Bitterroot National Forest and comes onto West Fork Road at Alta.

In 1978 commissioners said private landowners installed a gate 8 miles up the road.

Ravalli County Commission counsel Howard Recht said the road was designated as a public road in 1900 to provide access for placer mines.

Commissioners declined to abandon the road because it provides access to public land and water.”
