Brewer Road, Choteau County, Montana

Brewer Road Summary

A private gate was erected on public lands on Brewer Road in Choteau County. After several attempts to reach out to the BLM Havre Field Office, PLWA was able to speak the range management specialist for the area. Initial discussions indicated they were aware of the gate and believed the private landowner was only trying to protect their private property beyond the BLM land. There was no timeframe for resolution at the time of the initial call.

UPDATE: June 2023

BLM installed signage at the gate on Brewer Road indicating public access. Additionally, a boundary sign delineating private property was also erected to prevent trespassing.

UPDATE: October 2022

Further discussions were held with the regional BLM manager who verified the gate is currently unlocked (although it has been locked on occasion in the past). BLM spoke with the permit holder in the area and they have agreed to put up signage indicating public access up to their property line. The gate was installed roughly twelve years ago for range cattle and there are no indications the gate will be removed. The regional manager has agreed to follow up with pictures once the new signage is posted and the issue is resolved. The area is currently accessible by the public.
