Raynolds Pass, Madison County, Montana

Raynolds Pass Summary

The issue was encountered in July of 2021 on the Upper Madison River near Raynolds Pass fishing access. Residents had placed a sign on the long established trail near the river stating “no trespass” with an incorrect definition of the high water mark. The landowners hired their own private enforcement to confront anglers on/near their property.

PLWA has made several attempts to contact FWP about the issue. In March of 2022, we finally spoke with the Region 3 Manager who said they were not aware of the issue, but would look into it.

PLWA is now working to verify if the signage is still present and if anglers are still being harassed within the high water mark.

UPDATE: November 2023

After several attempts to follow up, PLWA has received no further communication from FWP about the issue. It is unclear whether the signage has been removed or whether the private security illegally harassing law-abiding citizens has been addressed.

UPDATE: December 2022

PLWA was able to obtain contact information for a local FWP employee working on the Madison River. They were informed of the issue and an email with images was forwarded on to other FWP authorities. PLWA is waiting to hear back on the current status of this access issue.
